Build Your Own Midi Controller

  • Billboard Studios HK 62-63 Connaught Road Central Central, Hong Kong Island Hong Kong (map)

Date: TBD
(3 Hours)
$2499 HKD ($310 USD)

Workshop Description:

If you are an instrumentalist interested in adding a computer to your performance or production workflow, there are quite literally hundreds of MIDI controllers to choose from. Some are designed to be played like a piano, but some are made to be stepped on with your feet. There are controllers you play like a drum and there are wireless ones you wear like gloves. In this hands-on workshop, you’ll build a 4-button midi controller that you can use in your playback rig or repurpose into a more sophisticated device later. The course includes a basic electronics foundation, an introduction to Arduino programming, and ideas for adding more functionality to your MIDI controller in the future. All tools and parts necessary to build your own MIDI controller that you will keep are included in the price of this course.

Who is this for?

This course is designed for anyone interested in building their own MIDI controller! A basic working understanding of the MIDI protocol will be useful but no musical experience is necessary.

Who is the Instructor?

Jeff Caylor is a music producer and Ableton Live specialist currently living and working in Hong Kong. With writing and production credits on more than 10 albums and several more singles, his most recent commercial work has focused on artists local to Hong Kong. Jeff is also the Music Director for Island ECC (an English-speaking church in Hong Kong) and collaborates with his wife Leora Caylor to form the dream pop duo, The Weathering. The Weathering can be found on releases with Base Industry Records, 7Core Music and Del Sol Music. Since 2017, Jeff has built multiple MIDI controllers he uses regularly on-stage in live performance with Ableton Live. in In 2013, Jeff Caylor joined three others to become the first Certified Trainers in Asia for Ableton Live, a software performance tool used extensively in stage shows around the world. In 2018, he completed a 2-week training intensive in Los Angeles, California called Mastertrack and hosted by Laura Escudé, CEO of Electronic Creatives. The client list of Electronic Creatives reads like a who’s who of modern pop music and includes Kanye West, Logic, The Weeknd, Drake, Harry Styles, Pentatonix, Iggy Azalea, Mike Posner, Porter Robinson, Lady Gaga, Camila Cabello, and many more. Some of the music industry's most prominent artists, playback engineers, music directors and mixing engineers comprised the team of mentors at Mastertrack who each generously opened their laptops to share trade secrets and best practices for fourteen days straight. This valuable 2-week education (that included hands-on network television rehearsal experience)–combined with Jeff’s history of using Ableton Live to control tracks, lights, lyrics, autotune, and custom patch switching–position Jeff Caylor as one of the premiere resources in Asia for live playback operation, custom rig-building and live stage performance consultancy.
